Summary

This is a very rare and historically significant military dive watch—the Benrus Type II Class B MIL-W-50717 with hack set, Fully Serviced by ClockSavant. The history of this watch begins with Benrus, a watch company founded in 1921. Benrus persevered the quartz crisis by diversifying into manufacturing watches for the US military during the Viet Nam war. Their premier military watch was manufactured to military standard MIL-W-50717, identified by a Type (I or II) and Class (A or B.) According to Worn & Round, there were approximately 9000 Type II Class A’s manufactured and another 6000 Type I Class A’s. The Type II Class B, shown here for sale, is the rarest version with only approximately 1000 manufactured. They Type II dial differs from the Type I dial. Further, the Class B model contains no tritium to avoid having the watch set-off radiation detectors on nuclear submarines or other nuclear sites and also to reduce the risk of detection by the enemy when on infiltration missions. This is a beautiful, highly functional, and legible military dive watch that has an amazing feeling of solidity, history, and presence on your wrist. It features a thick innovative one-piece case, heavily domed crystal, fixed lugs, non-ratcheting bezel, and screw-down crown. The watch is in superb condition and all original with a new replacement crystal exactly matching the fit of the original and a new split stem. You want a new stem on these watches as the old ones either have failed or will fail due to age, often resulting in loss of the crown. The movement is a hack set Benrus calibre KG1D2 (modified ETA 282101), fully serviced by ClockSavant and running superbly. We paired the watch with a strap that is historically correct for this watch and looks great—a Marathon military specification MIL-S-46383 single piece nylon strap. Though this watch was designed as a diving watch, it should no longer be exposed to water.

The watch is a hack set movement allowing for precise synchronization with other members of a military team. When the crown is pulled-out to set the time, hack set watches stop. When you push the crown back in, they start running again.

ClockSavant Watchmaker Testing, Certification, and Performance Measurement

All the watches we sell go through a comprehensive series of ClockSavant-developed functional, stability, and performance tests and are only approved for sale if they meet or exceed the criteria we have established. Performance measurements for this watch are provided below. See the Support page of our website for an explanation of watch performance measurements and guidance on interpretation. The watch performance values provided do not necessarily reflect the accuracy you will experience based on your unique watch wearing habits. You may experience a gain or loss by as much as approximately 1 minute per day with vintage watches. Legend: Rate, Amplitude (Amp), and Beat Error (BE) are provided for Dial-Up (CH) and Dial-Down (FH) positions. Averages (Avg) are also provided. These represent the average performance of the watch across all 6 traditionally measured watch positions which, in addition to dial-up and dial-down, are the vertical positions of Crown-Up, Crown-Down, Crown-Left, and Crown-Right. Rate is expressed in seconds gained or lost during a 24 hour period. Amplitude is in degrees. Beat Error is in milliseconds. Lift Angle used in measurement is unique to the particular watch calibre.
