Summary

Squale was a leader in the design and manufacturing of true diver watches in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Their watch cases were both beautiful and innovative. The unique water sealing mechanisms they employed were effective and proven by professional divers. Squale supplied watches to other brands but because the Squale brand was so respected, they were often co-branded. This beautiful vintage 1960’s watch is co-branded Squale and Wertex. Squale also supplied the parachutist’s corps "Folgore Brigade" part of the Italian Airforces ("Aeronautica Militare Italiana") and the Italian Navy’s Diving Corps ("Marina Militare Italiana") with timepieces during the 1960’s and 1970’s. The Italian family that was the main distributor during Squale’s heyday purchased the company. Squale exists today and still sells beautiful diver watches. The all-original watch shown here features a stunning tropical dial, beautiful blue/white ratcheting bezel, original screw-down crown, and the superb design and classic styling that made Squale so popular. This is a very substantial, large, and well-made watch. It features a premium Felsa 4007N automatic movement with semi-quickset date. This version having the higher grade copper colored anti-corrosion coating that clearly has done its job and incabloc shock protection. The watch was originally designed to a 600 meter water resistance rating. However, it should no longer be used for diving. While vintage watches should be kept from water and rain, we were successful at testing this watch to a water resistance level of 3atm on our Witschi Proofmaster for resistance to rain and splashing, giving you some assurance should accidental water exposure occur. We paired the watch with a new high quality leather RIOS Black Kaluga rally strap.

ClockSavant Watchmaker Testing, Certification, and Performance Measurement

All the watches we sell go through a comprehensive series of ClockSavant-developed functional, stability, and performance tests and are only approved for sale if they meet or exceed the criteria we have established. Performance measurements for this watch are provided below. See the Support page of our website for an explanation of watch performance measurements and guidance on interpretation. The watch performance values provided do not necessarily reflect the accuracy you will experience based on your unique watch wearing habits. You may experience a gain or loss by as much as approximately 1 minute per day with vintage watches. Legend: Rate, Amplitude (Amp), and Beat Error (BE) are provided for Dial-Up (CH) and Dial-Down (FH) positions. Averages (Avg) are also provided. These represent the average performance of the watch across all 6 traditionally measured watch positions which, in addition to dial-up and dial-down, are the vertical positions of Crown-Up, Crown-Down, Crown-Left, and Crown-Right. Rate is expressed in seconds gained or lost during a 24 hour period. Amplitude is in degrees. Beat Error is in milliseconds. Lift Angle used in measurement is unique to the particular watch calibre.
