Summary

This is a rare Universal Geneve (UN) Compax vintage chronograph reference 22493 Calibre 287 from 1942, Fully Serviced by ClockSavant.  Founded in 1894, UN would become synonymous with very high quality chronographs used by aviators, the military, and others. Through affiliations with Zenith and Martel, the latter being a relatively unknown but significant player in the early days of wristwatch chronographs, UN became a major force featuring their own in-house movements. In 1938, at the suggestion of Hermes in Paris, UN began design of the Compax line incorporating an hour counter. The watch shown here is one of the earliest Compax examples and features a gilt finished movement. Its serial number dates it to ~ 1942. The beauty of the movement speaks for itself, and of special note is the superb design of the hour counter mechanism which I show in the dial-side picture. Few hour register chronograph modules are as robust and well designed as this one— it eliminates the frictional wear sometimes found in other chronographs of the era. The accuracy of this watch is superb after being fully serviced and is a fantastic original example of one of the finest wristwatch chronographs of the 1940’s. Our assessment is that everything is original on this watch. The hour and minute hands were re-lumed in the past by a previous watchmaker, the job was done reasonably well and the lume is still bright and effective. This watch’s design is substantial and part of why this reference is do desirable. It wears larger at 36mm without the crown, 44mm lug-to-lug, and 13mm thick.
