Summary

This is an excellent and rare example of one of the earlier vintage military aviator chronograph wristwatches. These were expensive watches for the time and were used by the military, aviators, doctors, scientists, and emergency personnel when they transitioned from pocket watches to wristwatches. This is a beautiful aged example of an earlier Valjoux 22 chronograph with breguet overcoil and gilt finish. We believe this to be one of the earliest examples of the Valjoux 22 movement. The watch case has one fixed lug and the other has a spring bar, likely because somewhere along the line the fixed lug was broken and they repaired it with a spring bar.  The earliest vintage chronographs and wristwatches in general used fixed lugs and not spring bars. We estimate this watch to have been made during the earliest run of the two button Valjoux 22 based on its manufacturing attributes and the overall design of the watch and its case.  The watch is running very well.  This is a fantastic example of a classic Valjoux 22 vintage aviator chronograph.

Service History

We did not fully service this watch. ClockSavant performed repairs to the chronograph mechanism, replaced worn and broken parts with new old stock parts, and performed adjustment. We performed comprehensive testing and performance measurement.

Condition

Case has the typical scratches and dings that are common to watches of this age and add to its character. Similarly the dial shows some discoloration, again common for watches of this age.  The gold plating on the watch has considerable wear and has flaked off in many spots. It contributes to its aged vintage look and charm but is something you should note. One of the fixed lug bars has been replaced with a spring bar.

All the watches we sell go through a comprehensive series of ClockSavant-developed functional, stability, and performance tests and are only approved for sale if they meet or exceed the criteria we have established. Performance measurements for this watch are provided below. See the Support page of our website for an explanation of watch performance measurements and guidance on interpretation. Averages (Avg) are also provided. These represent the average performance of the watch across all 6 traditionally measured watch positions which, in addition to dial-up and dial-down, are the vertical positions of Crown-Up, Crown-Down, Crown-Left, and Crown-Right. Rate is expressed in seconds gained or lost during a 24 hour period. Amplitude is in degrees.
